Anna Reay & Deon Krishnan @ The Vermont Hotel. October 2

Anna Reay (vocals) & Deon Krishnan (guitar & vocals)
Arriving at seven o’clock hoping to catch the last half hour of Anna Reay’s set, it became apparent that her engagement started only minutes earlier. The Vermont Hotel’s publicity is less than reliable! On taking a seat, Reay invited your correspondent to suggest a song! Come Fly with Me? Ms Reay and her accompanist Deon Krishnan didn’t hesitate. A nice way to settle into a plush Chesterfield. The classy duo took requests from guests – a party from South Africa (sporting Springbok shirts ahead of this weekend’s big rugby game), a chilled-out hen party, couples – and met each one in style. Don’t Know Why, Moon River, Ain’t No Sunshine, At Last, Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Ed Sheeran and…Puccini! An eclectic list, to stay the least!
Ms Reay is an assured performer capable of handling a wide range of material. Krishnan, renowned as a bass player, is a fine guitarist (and singer too!). A most enjoyable first set. An appointment with Swing Manouche at the Jazz Café (see review) dispelled any notion of staying put. Reay and Krishnan playing a GAS book set at the Jazz Café would be an enticing proposition.
